ARRL EME Contest Report   (rules)

This year I will be entering the contest in the 23cm Mixed Mode Unassisted section... that was my original intention, I later changed my mind as explained in my soapbox comments:

"This year I operated on CW, SSB and JT65 totally Unassisted and tried to bag as many QSO's as possible... any mode.

My original intention was to enter the Mixed Mode Category, but realised afterwards that the real challenge was of course in the Analog Category. So I sent in logs for Analog, Digital and Mixed with a preference to enter ANALOG if only one category is allowed."

Conditions were strange as previously reported in the October session, but very good in November, with plenty of activity over both weekends.

The ARRL contest always seems to generate a lot of interest, and knowing that there WILL be plenty of activity provides a good opportunity for those making their first attempts at EME. The expedition to P43L on the contest weekend almost certainly helped too… well done Al and all involved, and thanks for the QSO’s.

At times, the bottom 35 KHz of 23cm was crammed with stations, and some of them were VERY loud… like HB9SV, HB9BBD, K5SO, HB9Q, OZ4MM and OK1DFC. Finding a quiet spot to call, was often difficult and at times stations were getting quite close to P43L’s sked frequency on 045.

Here’s the list of stations worked in the contest - by date in alphabetical order:

  W6BY - 2.4m dish in Jim N9JIM's front yard

YL3AG - 3.6m dish and septum feed with choke

Final score: 97 CW/SSB and 20 JT with 44 Multipliers = 514800 points… needs checking.

I’m not sure if Darrell VE1ALQ’s interpretation is correct about double counting multipliers, I didn’t see it that way… my take on this is that contacts with the same station in CW and JT count for points, but multipliers only count once… please someone confirm or correct me if I am wrong.

Believe it or not I still missed some stations, and I know from other reports that there were more to be had:

DJ9YW, IK5WJD, IZ2DJP (heard testing with IW2FZR), JH1KRC, JR4ZZS, LA5ZK, OE9ERC (JT), W7UPF, W9IIX

Still not fixed my memory keyer after it failed at the start of last year’s contest, so all keying was done manually… if I had got the keyer, then I think I would have fell asleep with the TX running, so good move. Even so, I have a gap of 2hrs in the log on both nights when I fell asleep while sat at the rig.

Busy checking the log for mistakes… but I’m almost sure all is correct.

Many thanks to all who I was fortunate to have a QSO with, and if anyone called me and we did not complete then please let me know by email.
